About the Role

Applied Information is seeking a GIS/Data Intern to help support our six core business areas: Traffic, Public Transit, Remote Communications/Video Streaming, Fire/EMS, Law Enforcement, and Connected Vehicles.

The GIS/Data team plays a central role in how Applied Information leverages data to improve transportation safety, reliability, and efficiency. This position will assist in transforming raw geospatial and operational data into actionable insights that enhance the performance and user experience of Applied Information solutions such as Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP), Transit Signal Priority (TSP), connected vehicle systems, and remote communications.

This position offers hands-on experience working with big data, GIS analytics, and visualization tools to inform decision-making, support customer engagement, and strengthen the value of Applied Information’s services.

The position is on-site only in Alpharetta, GA, and open to current undergraduate (junior year equivalent or higher) and graduate students, as well as recent graduates who are completing their degree in the Fall 2025 semester/trimester.


Responsibilities

Business & Stakeholder Support

  • Assist in translating business and stakeholder needs into geospatial analyses, dashboards, and visualizations.

  • Support sales, product, and technical teams with maps, reports, and analytics that align with messaging and decision-making needs.

  • Summarize and present results of geospatial and statistical analyses in formats suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Document project requirements, data workflows, and analysis methods for reuse and knowledge transfer.

Data Analysis & Design Support

  • Prepare, clean, and organize spatial and tabular datasets to support business analysis projects.

  • Contribute to the design of dashboards, story maps, and presentation materials, ensuring outputs are intuitive, professional, and aligned with Applied Information’s standards.

  • Participate in exploratory data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in transportation, public safety, and communications datasets.

Quality Assurance & Data Improvement

  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of large and complex datasets, screening for errors, gaps, and inconsistencies.

  • Assist in implementing data quality improvement processes and documenting results.

  • Validate geospatial outputs and dashboards to ensure accuracy, usability, and consistency with stakeholder requirements.

Technical Support (Supplemental)

  • Provide support for developing simple scripts, workflows, or templates (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Python, SQL) under guidance from senior staff.

  • Help maintain geospatial datasets, metadata, and design standards.

  • Contribute to testing and validating geospatial tools and analytics pipelines.

Research & Learning

  • Explore emerging GIS and analytics methods relevant to traffic, transit, public safety, and communications.

  • Document processes, findings, and lessons learned for internal reference and future interns.

  • Engage in professional development activities to broaden GIS and analytical skills, with potential to earn sponsorship to attend the 2026 ESRI User Conference dependent on funding and performance.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Current undergraduate (junior year or higher) or graduate student enrolled in a 4-year university, or recent graduate who completed their degree during the Fall 2025 semester/trimester (within six months of internship start).

  • Degree program in GIS, Data Analytics/Business Informatics, Statistics, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong academic foundation in geospatial concepts, data analysis, or transportation/public safety systems.

  • Proficiency with common GIS or data analytics software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, or similar).

  • Intermediate knowledge of coding languages used in analysis and automation, such as Python, SQL, ESRI Arcade, or other relevant languages. 

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated academic or research interests in:

    • Transportation planning

    • Public transit systems

    • Public safety (Fire/EMS, Law Enforcement)

    • Remote/cellular communications

  • Experience with transportation datasets, network analysis, or geospatial modeling.

  • Familiarity with web-based mapping or visualization tools.


Additional Information

  • Experiential Learning credit will be sponsored in coordination with your academic program. Academic credit for real-world experience is valuable and students should receive credit for their professional development. 

  • This position is on-site only in Alpharetta, GA. This position is not eligible for remote work, however the work schedule may be flexible.

  • Qualified candidates must be able to commute to Applied Information’s offices in metro Atlanta, or temporarily relocate to metro Atlanta for the summer to be eligible for this intern position.

  • U.S. work authorization is required. This position is not eligible to be sponsored for any visa or special work permit. 

  • Interns will be provided with the requisite technology and working space. All work shall be conducted on company devices only.

  • Physical Demands / Work Environment: This position is performed in a professional office environment. While this position may occasionally assist with simple office tasks (e.g., moving light materials or equipment), the role does not require lifting or carrying as a condition of employment.
